Govt to regulate prices of commonly used medical devices

Just like drugs, the prices of common medical devices including digital thermometers, glucometers, BP monitors and nebulizers will be stipulated by the government from the year 2020 onward. These four medical devices have recently been notified by the Union Government under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, opening the way for the regulation of their prices.
With the inclusion of these four, as many as 27 medical devices have now come under the definition of drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The Drug Controller General of India will regulate manufacturing, sale and import of these medical devices from January 1, 2020.
Companies will now have to register these medical devices under the quality parameters prescribed under the Medical Devices Rules 2017.
The health ministry has through a notification on December 3, 2018, specified medical devices intended for internal or external use in the diagnosis, treatment, mitigation or prevention of disease or disorder in human being or animals to be included in the definition for drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetic Act, 1940, effective from January 1, 2020.
