FICCI seeks unified pharma regulator as business facilitator

Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers DV Sadananda Gowda has sought the pharma industry's views on how they can actively contribute to the national health protection scheme Ayushman Bharat to improve access to medical care.

Mr Gowda was speaking at the 4th International Conference on Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices organized by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers jointly with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).

The minister also assured government support to the industry to "achieve and maintain leadership position in manufacturing and supply of high quality generic medicines".

Mr Gowda said, "We intend to continue formulating plans that are based on sound science, technology, business sense and ethics. We continue to strive to increase the ease of doing business in India for which several measures have already been announced and many others will follow."

Chairman, FICCI Pharma Committee S Sridhar said that the industry believed in universal healthcare at affordable price for all Indian citizens, adding that this is a long term plan and requires a joint effort by the Government, industry and other stakeholders to collectively own this vision.

Badhri Iyengar, Chairman, FICCI Medical Device Forum, favoured having a unified healthcare regulator who could act as a bridge between the industry and the Government to create one window for facilitating business.

Drug regulators from over 30 countries including Russia, Kenya, the UK, Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia & Uzbekistan participated in the conference along with drug regulators from 15 states across India.
