Community outreach: How Delhi improves its cleanliness rank

Rohit Shishodia
The Delhi government is running an intense community outreach campaign to educate people about protecting the environment and hygiene. The government has joined the national capital's various municipal bodies to conduct this campaign.

The initiative, taken by the Delhi government, has been named as 'Clean Delhi', 'Healthy Delhi', and 'Our Delhi'. Under this initiative people living in different colonies and clusters are informed about preventive steps that promote hygiene, no plastic use and protection from air pollution.

The government is using four-wheeled vehicles equipped with LEDs that show videos to educate about hygiene and cleanness. The Delhi government has associated students with the initiative as volunteers who educate people about not using plastic bags, not throwing any waste in the open, conservation of rain water, making new bags by using old cloth, no waste burning, converting kitchen waste to compost and segregation of wet and dry waste.

The volunteers, along with the vehicles, go to colonies and organize awareness programs at a known landmark. After educating them through play and other modes of education, they take feedback from people to ensure that they have understood the message.

"We educate about Swachhta Sarvekshan-2020. We tell how we can improve our rankings," said Raghav, one of the volunteers who is educating people in East Delhi.

"We motivate them for tree plantation. We tell them about not throwing rinds of peanuts. These rinds, if put in water, can generate compost. Rinds release salt and when the salt is released, then remaining part of the rind is compost. This compost can be used for plantation. Many people don't know about it," said Raghav.

"We educate them about not using plastic bags. We also tell people about segregation of waste that includes wet waste and dry waste," said another volunteer.

He added that people are told about not using plastic bowls.  "They are educated about using steel utensils, " he added.
