Municipal hospitals neglected by Delhi government: Dr Vardhan

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has said that hospitals run by the municipal corporations in Delhi have not developed due to the state government's neglect.
Assembly elections are due in Delhi.
Inaugurating the OPD block at Tilak Nagar Colony Hospital in Delhi run by the North Delhi Corporation, Dr Vardhan said, “When I was health minister in Delhi in 1996, I got to know that corporation hospitals with 30-35 beds running in different colonies do not run as per their capacity. We decided to take them over and convert them into 100-bedded hospitals and run them in a better way.”
“But in Delhi it is an irony that whichever government comes in Delhi, it functions according to its political wishes and takes decisions and makes polices on that basis. After year 2000, Delhi government decided that corporation will administer their hospitals,” said Dr Vardhan.
“Had the past governments supported corporation hospitals in these last 25 years, these hospitals would have played a major role in providing healthcare services in the national capital,” he added.
“In the 25 years, a lot could have been done in these hospitals. Even a five year tenure is enough to make development. We did this in the centre. We made AIIMS functional in different parts of the India,” said Dr Vardhan.
He pointed out that fund given by the central government to Delhi government includes the fund for the corporations but the state government does not give it to the corporations. This led to stoppage of salary of employees of corporations,” he said.
