Kerala confirms rare viral infections in Wayanad

A day after 13 students from a veterinary college in Wayanad district was confirmed to be suffering from rare but highly infectious Norovirus, the Kerala government has urged people to remain vigilant against the spread of infection.

Authorities collected the samples and sent them to the National Institute of Virology at Alappuzha for testing who confirmed the virus, health officials in the state said.

In a meeting with the health officials in the state capital, the health minister, Veena George took stock of the situation in Wayanad.

According to a health department release, the minister directed the officials to intensify activities to prevent the spread of the virus.

As of now, though there is no cause of concern, everyone should remain vigilant against the disease, the statement said.

Officials said preventive steps including super chlorination of water supply are ongoing to stop the virus from spreading.

Norovirus, also called "winter vomiting bug", is a virus that stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Though not highly fatal, it can cause a lot of discomfort to the patients and symptoms usually last for 2 days.

Simple hygienic actions like washing hands with soap to contain the virus from spreading, the experts say.
