Air pollution menace: SC directs center to call for emergency meeting

DTMT Network

The Supreme Court on November 15, 2021, has directed the central government to call for an emergency meeting on November 16, 2021, over issues like stopping construction, non-essential transport, power plants and implementing work from home to control air pollution in Delhi- NCR.

The court observed that major culprits of air pollution are transport, industries, and vehicular traffic apart from stubble burning in some areas.

The center told the court that stubble burning is not the major cause of pollution at present in Delhi and northern states, as it contributes to only 10% of the pollution.

The Delhi government has told the court that it is ready to impose a complete lockdown in Delhi to control air pollution.

The government suggested that it would be meaningful if lockdown is implemented across NCR areas in neighboring states.

Expressing unhappiness, the court said that this is not how an executive emergency meeting was expected to be held.

“It is unfortunate that we have to set an agenda for them,” the apex court added.
