The doctors are peeved that RGSSH is the only Delhi government run hospital which is not paying salaries in accordance with the recommendations of the seventh central pay commission.

Patient care services were severely affected in the Delhi government-run Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital (RGSSH) for the third consecutive day on March 8, 2018, as 80 resident doctors continued their strike against non-implementation of the seventh central pay commission recommendations.

The RGSSH is a superspeciality hospital in Delhi where patients are referred from other government hospitals for critical diseases such as heart attack, strokes, liver failure and pulmonary illnesses.

The strike has resulted in massive inconvenience to the patients who are being referred here by other government health facilities.

Doctors said that they do not want to make patients suffer but their demand of implementing the 7th CPC must be fulfilled. They said that they had struck work in January 2018 for the same reason but they were assured by the hospital administration that the recommendations of 7th CPC will be implemented. But that did not happen.

Dr Shailendra Singh, General Secretary, Resident Doctors Association, RGSSH, told DTMT that the resident doctors are on mass leave in RGSSH demanding implementation of the recommendations of 7th CPC.

“We are not operating emergency and OPD services. Only consultants are running these services. We will not resume work unless our demands of payment of salary in accordance with 7th CPC and payment of arrears are met. Every Delhi government-run hospital has implemented 7th CPC but RGSSH has not done it. Why is this happening in RGSSH, asked Dr Singh.

Dr Singh explained, “We discussed the issue with RGSSH’s director who assured early implementation of 7th CPC. We do not think that our issue is being taken seriously. It has been four months since the new director took charge. He held the former director responsible for non-implementation 7th CPC, but four months have passed after his joining, yet nothing has happened.”
