NEW DELHI: A Delhi-based doctor couple has been ordered by a consumer forum to pay Rs 15 lakh to a woman for their negligence in which the patient lost sight in one of her eyes 14 years ago.

The doctor couple owned Aditya Eye Care and Opticals Pvt. Ltd. in Delhi has been ordered by the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) to pay the amount as compensation to the patient for the botched-up eye surgery.

The commission remarked that the doctor failed to produce any educational certificates which show competency to conduct an eye surgery.

As per the SCDRC record, the Delhi Medical Council had issued a warning to the doctor couple for not submitting proper certificates about their qualifications.

The accused also failed to disclose if the surgery was done in the charitable organisation or a clinic.

According to the complaint, the victim, Savita Khanna, had gone to the Aditya Eye Care for a cataract operation on February 2, 2004.

The patient alleged that Dr Laxmi Pal and Dr Savita Pal in the hospital didn’t follow the necessary procedures before the surgery which resulted in heavy bleeding.

Another surgery was performed on March 1, 2004, but the condition of her eye did not improve.

Savita suffered a complete loss of vision due to the negligence of the doctor. She claimed Rs 28 lakhs as compensation.

The doctor couple had denied the allegation of negligence and had contended that all necessary steps were taken pre-surgery. They also said that the patient was advised to come again for follow up checks.
