Fear, anxiety & stigma seen among people during pandemic: AIIMS prof.

Fear, anxiety, stigma, internet addiction, and complicated grief were observed among the people over the past one and half years of the pandemic, Delhi-AIIMS psychiatrists said while sharing their experience on what exactly the deadly disease did to mental health.
In an interaction with Drug Today Medical Times (DTMT) on the overall impact of COVID-19 on mental health, Prof. Rakesh Chadda, HOD, Department of Psychiatry, Delhi-AIIMS, said that excessive fear and anxiety of getting coronavirus infection can result in depression.
He said that during one and half years people were very much apprehensive of COVID-19 infection.
There were two types of people, firstly the one who had COVID and secondly those who had a normal fever but were living in fear of COVID.
“However those who had COVID, 80-85% of them did not have symptoms. Only 10-15% had symptoms but those who were in their contacts had fear and anxiety. If this fear and anxiety are exaggerated it can turn into depression,” Prof. Chadda explained.
“Many people have overcome this fear except for those who have not recovered, especially those who lost their loved ones due to COVID and those who had long COVID suffered from various mental health problems,” Prof Chadda said.
Prof Chadda informed that anxiety, depression, and delirium were found in admitted COVID patients.
“Delirium is found in 4-5% COVID patients. It takes four to five days to recover. Around 10%-12% of COVID patients would require treatment. Around 25%-30% can recover through counseling,” he further said.
Prof. Mamta Sood from the Department of Psychiatric, Delhi-AIIMS, pointed out that complicated grief was observed especially in the second wave when many people died of COVID-19.
“They did not have time to process the death of their relatives. Hence, a huge amount of grief was seen which I never saw. Many patients who lose their loved ones come to me in OPDs. I always counsel that there is farewell in death but there was no farewell in COVID deaths which resulted in grief,” she added.
