Anaemia among children rising: NFHS5 data

Rajeev Choudhury

The incidences of anaemia among children are rising, data from  National Family Health Survey Round 5 reveal.

The data, that was released recently estimates that overall 67% of children between the age of 6-59 months had some degree of anaemia (haemoglobin levels below 11.0 g/dl) in 2019-2021 against 59% measured during the 2015-16 period.

Anaemia is more prevalent in rural areas (68.3%) compared to urban areas (64.2%), the data showed.

While 29% of children had mild anaemia, 36 % had moderate, and 2 % had severe anaemia in the 2019-21 period compared to 28%, 29% and 1.6% respectively in 2015-16, the data revealed.

A close look at the data revealed that anaemia was most prevalent among children less than 35 months of age with a peak prevalence of 80% among the children in the 12-17 month age group.

Among the states, Gujarat topped the list with almost 80% of the children in the 6-59 month age group being anaemic, followed by Madhya Pradesh (73%), Rajasthan (72%), and Punjab (71%), while Kerala with 39.4% of the children in the 6-59 months age group reported the lowest prevalence of anaemia, the data further revealed.

While 72.3% of children of the Jain community were anaemic making the condition most prevalent among all religious communities, the prevalence of anaemia was highest among the children of the Scheduled Tribes at 72.4%, the data further revealed.
