Lack of progress in tackling malaria deeply troubling: WHO

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General, WHO,  has said that while we’re seeing encouraging signs, the burden of suffering and death caused by malaria is unacceptable, because it is largely preventable. The WHO DG has lamented: "The lack of improvement in the number of cases and deaths from malaria is deeply troubling.”

The latest World Health Organization (WHO) report has pointed out that the cases and deaths due to malaria has remained at 57 per 1000 population at risk from 2014 till 2018.

According the World Malaria Report 2019, the incidence of malaria declined globally between 2010 and 2014, from 71 to 57 cases per 1000 population at risk. However, the number remained at 57 per 1000 at risk population till 2018..
In 2018, there were an estimated 405 000 deaths from malaria globally, compared with 416 000 estimated deaths in 2017, and 585 000 in 2010.

Children aged under 5 years are the most vulnerable group affected by malaria. In 2018, they accounted for 67% (272 000) of all malaria deaths worldwide.
