The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that it will decide today whether to declare Coronavirus as public health emergency or not.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General, WHO, said, “The decision about whether or not to declare a public health emergency of international concern is one I take extremely seriously, and one I am only prepared to make with appropriate consideration of all the evidence.”

It may be noted that till date the WHO has declared public health emergency only five times in the past decade.

They include H1 virus that caused an influenza pandemic (2009), West Africa's Ebola outbreak (2013-2016), Polio (2014), Zika virus (2016) and Ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (2019).

According to a report, the deadly virus has killed 17 people in the Wuhan city of China where the virus originated. The report further says that the virus has infected around 500 people across the globe.
