Complex surgery cures Iraqi woman of cancer

BS RAWAT
Gurugram: A 65-year-old Iraqi woman got a new lease of life after undergoing a complex surgery in a Gurugram hospital for the cure of a "rare tumour", thereby allowing her to breath fresh air and walk properly after a gap of several years, doctors have said.

A team of doctors in Artemis Hospitals in Gurugram examined her case and she was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Mesothelioma of the left pleural cavity, they said.

Her disease was at an advanced stage during the time of evaluation and her condition was not good at all, said doctors.

After chemotherapy sessions, her general condition started improving and the disease also showed good response comparing to PET-CT.

Dr. Parveen Yadav, Associate Sr. Consultant-Surgical Oncology, said, “Proper consent was taken from the family and the patient was taken for surgery. The complete removal of growth with Hyperthermic Intrathoracic Chemotherapy (HITHOC) was done and the patient recovered well in the postoperative period.”

Mrs. Dalal said, “I have been struggling with the constant pain in my chest along with other consequences of the disease but never had the idea that these could be the signs of Cancer. We are thankful to Artemis Hospital and its doctors for providing us the best treatment and curing my disease.”

HITHOC, the Hyperthermic Inthoracic Chemotherapy, is a technique in which chemotherapy at high temperatures is given at the time of surgery. The principle of this therapy is to kill microscopic cancer cell which is not visible to the naked eye. This technique requires a special machine and a unique setup. At present, only a few centers are doing it across the world.
