New COVID-19 infections in US tripled over last year: Data

Misbah Ali

The United States is witnessing three times more infections of coronavirus on an average than it did a year ago.

As per the data from Johns Hopkins University, the seven-day average of daily fresh infection in the US was 1, 37,270 as of September 8, 2021.

At the same time in 2020, the nation was averaging just over 39,000.

Labour Day weekend recorded new cases more than three times than last year—during a time when many assumed that the pandemic may be coming to a close, as per the University data.

The rise in infections is blamed on the delta strain, which health officials say is more contagious than other variants.

Presently, just 53% of the Americans, including kids as young as 12 years, are fully inoculated; just more than 62% have had at least one shot, indicating that new coronavirus vaccine uptake is slowing.

The US is experiencing a different type of pandemic this wave. Now, people have the option to be inoculated against coronavirus. Vaccines were unavailable in 2020 at this time.

However, widespread inoculations have helped restrict coronavirus fatalities.

Despite witnessing more than three times as many daily infections on Labour Day 2021 compared to 2020, the US only records about 1.8 times as many daily fatalities.

Now, hospitalisations are far more than they were in 2020 at this time, which means that an imminent fall spike in hospital resource use could be devastating.

Healthcare facilities across the many states with rising cases struggle to maintain operations amidst shortages of beds, medical supplies, and personal protective equipment.

Concerns regarding an imminent surge from Labour Day made CDC Director Rochelle Walesnky last week advise that those who are not vaccinated should restrict travel.

Despite CDC’s warning, the Transportation Security Administration screened 7.3 million travellers between September 3 and September 6, compared to 3.2 million visitors in 2020 for the same weekend.

That marks a year-over-year rise of more than 4 million additional visitors.
