COVID-19: infections in Europe continues to rise, French PM tests positive

The Prime Minister of France, Jean Castex have tested positive for coronavirus, his office informed.

Europe is currently facing another round of surges in infections and according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDPC), in the past 24 hours, European Union member states reported 1,73,619 new infections on November 22, 2021.

Germany remains the most affected country with 30,643 new cases followed by Hungary, Netherlands, France, Poland and Austria.

A maximum number of 392 deaths was reported from Hungary; the EU member countries reported 1077 deaths on November 22, 2021.

Russia continues to be at the epicentre of COVID infections in Europe with 34,533 new cases reported on November 22, 2021.

So far the country over nine million people have been infected by the virus which has resulted in 2.5 lakh deaths due to the pandemic; however, data indicates that the infections are on a downward path since November 5, 2021.

The situation in the United Kingdom also remains grim with 44,434 new cases reported from the country on November 22, 2021.

Many countries in Europe are currently reporting the highest number of new cases since the beginning of the pandemic that continues to put the public health system under enormous strain, reports suggest.
