Over 18 million new COVID19 cases reported in past 7 days: WHO

The world has seen a 20% rise in the number of fresh cases over the past seven days, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said.
“Omicron continues to sweep the world. Last week, there were more than 18 million reported cases; the number of deaths remains stable for the moment but we are concerned about the impact Omicron is having on already exhausted health workers and overburdened health systems,” the WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said while addressing the media in Geneva on January 18, 2022.
However the number of deaths remained stable and showed a 4% rise in the same period, the organisation informed.
“45,543 people who have died during the period, are far too many when we have the tools can prevent,” Maria Van Kerkhove Technical lead of COVID-19 response and the head of emerging diseases and zoonosis unit at the WHO said.
“We are hearing a lot of people suggest that Omicron is the last variant but this is not the case, as the virus is circulating at a very intense level around the world spreading,” she added.
Data from the WHO show that Europe reported a maximum number of fresh cases with over 7.1 million fresh cases in the past seven days, followed by the Americas reporting over 6.1 million cases.
Stating that narrative that Omicron causes the mild disease is misleading, Dr Tedros warned that the variant is causing hospitalisations and deaths, and even the less severe cases are inundating health facilities.
“The virus is circulating far too intensely with many still vulnerable,” he added.
Reminding that the next few weeks remain really critical for health workers and health systems for many countries, the WHO DG urged everyone to do their best to reduce the risk of infection so that pressure can be taken off the health system.
