A day after admitting that Covid infections have occurred in the country North Korea said that the recent fever of unknown origin has claimed six lives.

The reclusive North Korean president  Kim Jong Un visited the country’s emergency epidemic prevention headquarters on May 12, 2022, and took stock of the situation, the state media reported.

The country is reeling under explosive cases of fever of unknown origin since late April infecting over 350,000 people, it added.

About 18,000 new cases of fever were reported across the country on May 12, 2022, and currently, about 187,800 people are being isolated and treated, the state media reported.

Of the six persons who have died from the disease, one tested positive for the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron, according to the release by the country’s central news agency.

The president ordered the sectors of public health and emergency epidemic prevention to minutely observe characteristics of the course of diseases of persons with fever and set up scientific treatment methods and tactics at a lightning speed.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that it is ready to support the nation in its fight against the disease.

It may be recalled that WHO along with its partners, including UNICEF and GAVI, supported North Korea in developing a Covid-19 vaccine deployment plan that was approved by a multi-partner body at the regional level, clearing the isolated nation to receive Covid-19  inoculations through UN-led equitable vaccine distribution initiative COVAX.

However, the country is yet to vaccinate its 25 million citizens against the disease, reports from WHO indicate.
