Unsafe food causes 60 crore cases of illness annually: WHO

Consumption of unsafe food causes as many as 600 million cases of illnesses annually. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that this unsafe and unhygienic food is a huge global threat to health and economics.
The unsafe food particularly affects marginalized people including children and others affected by conflict and migration. To address the issue of unsafe food and to identify key initiatives and plans, the WHO and its associated partners will jointly hold a two-day conference in April 2019 in Geneva.
The conference will be attended by Health and Agriculture Ministers from across the world. Leading researchers of food safety, partner agencies and representatives of consumers and food producers will also participate in the mega event.
The experts are expected to strengthen the commitment at the highest political level to scale up food safety in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Issues such as ongoing changes in global food production, climate change and industry will be addressed in the conference.
The WHO said that such changes can have an impact on food safety systems and pose sustainability and development challenges.
