Colleagues humiliated: Delhi ESI docs threaten strike

 Rohit Shishodia
Around 75 resident doctors at Delhi’s Basai Darapur-ESI hospital have threatened to strike work from November 19, 2019, in the wake of ‘humiliating’ behavior with a doctor by the Additional Medical Suprintendent (AMS) of the hospital.

The doctors have met senior medical commissioner of ESI and DG ESI and demanded action against the AMS. Doctors said that on November 14, 2019, an urgent MRI was needed for 11-year-old Dheeraj who was suffering from acute pain in the leg, loss of range of motion, severe tenderness and high grade fever with signs of septicaemia.

“Since MRI facility is not presently working in ESI hospital, we referred the patient according to the norms set by ESI, HQ, which states that online P1 form is required for referrals, except in case of life saving emergency where AMS/CMO can send the patient upon offline referral paper duly signed by the HOD,” said Dr Rohan Krishnan, President, RDA, ESI hospital-Basai Darapur.

Dr Rohan added, “Dr. Sharad, tried to make an online p1 form since 9 am but could not succeed as server of the institute was down and no computer was working. At 1 pm, looking at the severity of the scenario, he went to SST cell to allow offline referral for which SST cell was ready as it was an emergency life saving situation but they asked him to get the signature of AMS as well.”

Dr Rohan said that when Dr. Sharad went to the AMS for the same, the AMS refused to sign it and the AMS abused him and asked him to get out and make online p1 form saying that he should get it done from fire department where internet server is working. After this he went to the fire department, but there also the server was down and not working

“At around 3 pm, he asked me to accompany him and request AMS again. When we went there AMS refused to do anything and hence we requested him that at least he writes something on the file or referral paper as the patient would not survive and it will become a medicolegal case,” explained Dr Rohan.

“The AMS then started abusing me and Dr. Sharad immediately saying that how dare we ask him to write something, he started abusing us with mother and sister abuses and he called security guards and held the collar of Dr. Sharad and then we started making video of it but he snatched the phone, deleted the videos and called the guards to throw us out of the premises,” said Dr Rohan.

“He threatened to ruin our career and said that he is a very powerful man and we will repent each day of our lives from now on. We are very depressed and on the verge of committing suicide,” he added.
