Delhi: ESI-Basai Darapur docs call off strike after assurance

 Rohit Shishodia
Resident doctors at ESI hospital-Basai Darapur, Delhi, have called off their proposed strike after they were assured of action in the matter of the hospital's Additional Medical Superintendent (AMS) who had apparently threatened to destroy the careers of two doctors.

The assurance has come from Mr Pranay Sinha, Additional Director General, ESI, who has appealed to the doctors not to resort to strike as that will affect the patient care and may bring more problems.

Dr Sinha also assured the doctors that a committee will be formed to look into the allegations made by the doctors, and if allegations are found true, action will be taken against the AMS.

Dr Rohan Krishnan, President, RDA, ESI-Basai Darapur, told DTMT: “We met Mr Sinha, who patiently listened to us. He expressed displeasure over the incident. He has assured us of action on AMS and he also said a memorandum against the AMS will also be released.”

Dr Krishnan said that after the meeting with Mr Sinha an RDA meet was held where it was decided that doctors will not strike work. The findings of the report are likely to come within one week.

Dr Krishnan has expressed the hope that action will be taken against the AMS as the panel and people who will probe the matter are non-medicos and they belong to Labour Ministry. The committee will not include Medical Superintendent, Additional Medical Superintendent and Dean of ESI-Basai Darapur.

It may be noted that Dr Krishnan and Dr Sharad, Junior Residents, were threatened by AMS ESI-Basai Darapur for ending their careers. Dr Sharad was allegedly humiliated by the the AMS. His collar was held by the AMS as he sought a written approval to allow MRI of an 11-year-old serious patient on November 14, 2019.
