Doctors at Asian Cancer Institute Daycare Centre, Borivali, Mumbai, have given a new lease of life to a 62-year-old wheelchair-bound woman suffering from stage 4 small cell lung cancer.
The patient was administered six cycles of chemotherapy and radiation to get her back on track. She responded dramatically to the treatment that saved her life.
Mayadevi Neopane, who was hypertensive, complained of facial and neck swelling, difficulty in breathing and cough that progressively worsened to make her wheelchair-bound and oxygen-dependent.
On consulting the chest physician, it was revealed that she was suffering from advanced lung cancer and may lose her life owing to the aggressive nature of the tumor. The patient was referred to Dr. Suhas Aagre,Consultant and Medical Oncologist, Asian Cancer Institute.
Dr. Aagre said, “It is the most aggressive type of cancer. Survival is poor (usually ranges in few months) as aggressive nature enables the tumor to spread to distant sites in a short span of time. Her tru-cut biopsy confirmed small cell lung carcinoma.”
Dr Aagre added that the patient also underwent a PET-CT which indicated that there was a large mass present in her right lung which narrows great vessels of the neck associated with bilateral pleural effusion and pericardial effusion too.
“The patient was given 6 cycles of chemotherapy and radiation. Fortunately, she responded dramatically to the treatment. Facial swelling was no more seen and her breathlessness also subsided. She is on regular follow up for last 2 years and leading a normal life,” he explained.
“I was devastated when lung cancer struck me. But, after taking treatment at the Asian Cancer Institute Day Care center, Borivali, I was assured that I will get back to normal even though many doctors declared that I wouldn’t survive. I thank the doctors for saving my life,” said Neopane.
