Nurses protest for minimum wages, social security

BS RAWAT
NEW DELHI:
Hundreds of nurses, under the banner of United Nurses Association (UNA), have urged the Delhi government to implement the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court orders to provide them minimum wages and social security benefits.

The agitating nurses gathered at Rajghat in Delhi and marched towards Delhi Secretariat on December 10.

Association General Secretary Joldin Francis told DTMT, “Employing a plumber in Delhi for less than Rs 17,000 a month would be illegal, but most private hospitals and nursing homes in Delhi pay nurses less. Even the biggest hospitals pay less than half of what the Delhi government pays its nurses.”

He said, “In 2016, an expert committee appointed at the direction of the Supreme Court recommended salary increases for private hospital nurses. In October 2019, the Delhi High Court ordered implementation. However, the hospital association continues to fight it, and the Delhi government refuses to act.”

Mr Francis pointed out that nurses are not merely skilled labourers but professionals, and hence ought to be paid more. "We demand that the Delhi Government ensure all nurses are paid fair living wages, " he said.

“Today, we have tried peaceful protest. Now we have no option but to step up the agitation,” said Mr Francis.
