BHATINDA:
A 46-year-old patient from Abohar, Haryana, suffering from Aplastic Anemia, a condition where the body stops producing enough blood cells, has got a new life, thanks to his elder brother.

Rajesh Kumar was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia in June 2017. He approached several hospitals in Haryana and Jaipur, but all in vain. He then came to Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, where Rajesh underwent successful bone marrow transplant (BMT).

Dr. Rahul Bhargava, Director, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant, said, “In the span of five months, Rajesh was transfused 22 bottles of platelets.”

Dr Bhargava stated, “As a procedure, blood sample was sent for human leukocyte antigen typing. The bone marrow cells of  Rajesh Kumar matched perfectly with those of his elder brother.”

“In this case, two and a half months after the transplant, the patient developed diarrhea, which was suggestive of fight between his brother's and his cells. This was managed successfully with immune suppression, thereby preventing death from graft versus host disease,” Dr. Bhargava explained.

Rajesh Kumar said, “When I came to Fortis I had very little hope left in me. I had to undergo blood transfusion every 7th day. My family was seeing me getting weak day by day and I could not do anything about it. When Dr. Bhargava gave me hope that after the BMT I could resume my life like before, I thought it was miracle.”
