IMA opposes NMC Act implementation, warns of chaos

BS RAWAT
NEW DELHI:
The Indian Medical Association has opposed the implementation of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, saying it is creating chaos for the future of medical students.

According to the Act, there will be a common entrance test for all U.G. medical seats from this year. Millions of aspirants to Medical seats were thus denied a genuine opportunity to take another test for AIIMS and JIPMER and have to face the huge mental stress of a single test deciding their fate, states an IMA press release.

“At the same time, separate tests have been announced for PG seats in these very institutions revealing the confusion prevailing in the Ministry regarding implementation of NMC Act. Students have no idea on what's in store,” it said.

National President (IMA) Dr Rajan Sharma, said, “We strongly oppose the move to play with the future of medical students of the country and urge the Union Health Ministry to hold consultations with all stakeholders and not jeopardize the career of students.”

Dr Sharma alleged, “While on one hand the Health Ministry quotes NMC Act and removes all annual inspections of Medical Colleges, on the other hand, it retains the entrance tests of AIIMS and JIPMER contrary to NMC Act.”
