Central panel investigating pediatric deaths in Udhampur

Concerned over the deaths of children due to unknown reasons, the Indian Health Ministry has sent a team of specialist doctors to Udhampur, Jammu, to investigate the deaths.

The team includes Dr Sumit Mehndiratta, Specailist (Pediatrics), Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi; Dr Mahesh Wagmare, Deputy Director (Microbiology), National Centre For Diseases Control, Delhi; Dr Suneet Kaur, Assitant Director (Epidemiology), National Center For Disease Control, Delhi; Dr Shilpa Tomar, Microbilogist, NIV, Pune; and Dr Avinash Deshatwar, Epidemiologist, NIV, Pune.

“The team will report to DGHS, Jammu, Dr Renu Sharma, and Dr Mahesh Waghmare will coordinate the team’s activities. The team will assist UT Health Department to investigate the cause of pediatric deaths and institute requisite public health measures. The team, upon completion of their activities, will submit a report to DGHS,” said the health ministry.

Dr Balwinder Singh, Consultant, Orthopedics, District Hospital, Udhampur, Jammu, told DTMT “More than 10 children died in Ramnagar district of Udhampur due to some type of unknown disease. Children below five years are dying because of kidney failure.”
