IMA seeks review of bio-medical waste rule

NEW DELHI: As hundreds of private clinics across the country face closure due to non- compliance with biomedical waste (BMW) rules, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has sought changes in the rules, saying this is most important for survival of small and mid-sector hospitals.
IMA National Working Group, led by National President Dr. Rajan Sharma, met Central Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) Member Secretary Dr. Prashant Gargav in Delhi to seek modifications in the Bio-Medical Waste Rules and Amendments that had come into force last year.
Under the rules, all healthcare facilities will have to make available the annual report on its website within a period of two years from the date of publication of the Bio-Medical Waste Management (Amendment) Rules.
Stressing that they were not against the implementation of the act, Dr Sharma said that they just wanted “certain changes” – like unnecessary compulsion of individual websites for each Hospital with reporting of BMW on websites.
Dr Sharma also objected to bar coding of biomedical waste and categorization of hospitals at par with industries and demanded separate categorization for healthcare establishment rule.
IMA also raised issues of consent to operate (CTO), grant of consent to establish (CTE) and Authorization. It demanded waiving of fees for Authorization.
The medical body objected to individual compulsion on hospitals for STP/ETP. It also expressed concern about expenses, space constraints, and viability
As per IMA demand, CPCB has formed a committee to look into the issues related to environmental compensation and steps will be taken after their report.
