Safdarjung docs to educate poor kids on kidney care

Doctors at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital have decided to mark the World Kidney Day, on March 12, on different note. The doctors have decided to engage underprivileged children in a public lecture to spread awareness about kidney ailments.
The doctors informed that on World Kidney Day a poster competition about kidney diseases will also be organized. Children who make the best three posters, adjudged by a jury of doctors, will be felicitated.
Dr Himanshu Verma, HOD, Department of Nephrology, Safdajung Hospital, has stressed creation of massive awareness about kidney ailments. Spreading information about kidney diseases among poor kids can help. “Last year we honored families of organ donors. This year we have decided to do something different. We will educate kids about non-communicable disease. We will also award them for performing well in the poster competition.”
Dr Verma pointed out that uncontrolled blood sugar, high blood pressure, prostate ailments and kidney stones lead to chronic kidney diseases. Autoimmune diseases such as lupus nephritis and rheumatoid arthritis also affect the kidneys. They are major risk factors. “Over the counter pain killers such as NSAIDs affect kidneys. NSAIDs include Ibuprofen, combiflam, aciclofenac, naproxen etc. They can affect kidneys,” he added.
