Delhi-AIIMS doctors have stated that performing different asanas of Yoga is effective in treating diabetes. Revealing the findings of a study, Dr Punit Mishra, Professor, Department of Community Medicine and one of the authors of the study, said that four hundred people suffering from diabetes in the last one year enrolled in the study.

“Four hundred diabetics were divided in two groups. Two hundred, who were taking medicines, were kept in one group while those who were taking medicines and performing Yoga simultaneously were kept in the other group. It was found that those who were performing Yoga and taking medicines had decreased level of HemoglobinA1C by 0.6 per cent,” said Dr Mishra.

It may be noted that Department of Community Medicine of Delhi-AIIMS is running a Community Based Structured Yoga Program in Delhi’s Dakshin Puri area. The initiative was started in 2018 to educate people about doing different Yoga asanas.

Doctors teach Yoga for three months at its center. After three months, people are advised to continue the Yoga practice at home. The doctors take follow up to ensure they are continuing the practice.

Dr Mishra informed that now it is established and evident that Yoga can control diabetes. The study will be published in journals and is open for scientific community. With these findings we can say that if a person performs modules of Yoga regularly for three months at fifty minutes per day, his blood sugar will have a difference, he added.
