Coronavirus vaccine will take 1.5- to 2 years: ICMR

A senior official of the Indian Council of Medical Research has told the media that vaccines of coronavirus will take a minimum of 1.5 to 2 years. Addressing the media in New Delhi he claimed that India has managed to isolate the coronavirus.

Allaying fears of the virus, Mr Luv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Health Ministry, said, “Right now, luckily for India, we don’t have any community transmission. We have only few cases that have come from outside and they have primarily affected their close family members.”

On use of masks, he clarified that using mask is not always necessary, if a person maintains effective social distance, mask is not needed. There is no need to panic. "We already have around one lakh testing kits available. Additional testing kits have already been ordered, and they are also in procurement,” he added.

On testing facilities to diagnose the coronavirus, Aggarwal said that 52 testing facilities are located across the country. There are a total of 56 sample collection centers. Out of the 73 people found to have the virus, 56 are Indians and 17 are foreigners, he added.
