Multiple organ donation gives new life to four

BS RAWAT
NEW DELHI:
Four people got a new lease of life after receiving organs of a 35-year-old man, including his heart and one kidney that were sent to All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for transplant, officials said on Friday.

Rajmani, who worked in a shoe factory in Delhi, suffered a serious head injury during a Holi party with his friends on his roof and was declared brain dead despite the best efforts by doctors at RML Hospital, Delhi, a senior official of the hospital said.

"After getting consent of the family, the harvested organs -- heart, liver and two kidneys -- were sent to multiple patients at different hospitals in Delhi-NCR. The heart and one kidney were sent to AIIMS-Delhi,” the official told DTMT.

"One of the kidneys of Mr Rajmani was retained by RML Hospital. The liver was sent to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, Delhi, but no green corridor was needed for that," the spokesperson added.

Ms Smriti Tiwari, spokesperson of the RML Hospital, said the donations were done as per the norms of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO).
