Delhi: Social distancing flouted near sealed hotspots

Cases of corona virus are spreading across Delhi and the government has sealed twenty hotspots in the capital to thwart the spread of the virus. However, social distancing, which is vital for preventing the virus spread, is being violated. across hotspots. People’s movement still continues near areas which have been sealed.

It may be noted that some streets of East Delhi’s Kichripur area have been sealed but unplanned way of distributing food is attracting crowds of people in clusters and some streets of the area.

There is a cluster in front of Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Kichripur. On April 8, 2020, some people were standing in a long queue in the scorching heat to get food to satiate their hunger. As the information spread about distribution of food, more people started coming from their homes and reached the venue where the food was being distributed.

This was all happening at a place from where the sealed area was not far away. But there was not a single official or policeman patrolling to manage the gathering of people. Similarly, ESI dispensary situated near Kukreja Hospital in Mayur Vihar Phase 1 has become a gathering spot for patients suffering from different ailments including flu. Vardhaman Apartments in Mayur Vihar phase 1 has been sealed following detection of a positive corona case.

A large gathering of patients and their attendants can be seen outside the dispensary in the morning for treatment. Some of them were not wearing masks, becoming potential candidates for spreading of the virus. People complained that they had been waiting because of the sluggishness of pharmacists.

They said that the doctors are right to maintain social distancing from patients because either doctor or patient can transmit the virus. But they complained about laziness of the pharmacist. They said that they too fear for coming there but since they are ill they cannot afford to continue without medicines.

Another long queue was spotted outside Bank of Baroda in the area where more than fifty people were waiting to get money and none of them was following social distancing. What was surprising was that there was no official to manage the queue or direct them to keep a distance from one another.
