Don't take hydroxychloroquine sans doctor's advice: Ministry

The Indian Health Ministry has said that people should not use hydroxychloroquine tablets, which have been recommended for use for doctors and individuals in contact with laboratory confirmed cases of the virus. The ministry has advised that the medicine should not be taken without doctor’s advice.

Briefing the media, Mr Luv Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Indian Health Ministry, said that hydroxychloroquine should be used only as per norms. "We have already informed that contacts of positive confirmed cases and doctors who are dealing with corona patients, may only use this medicine” he added.

Mr Aggarwal pointed out that this particular medicine could be harmful for people suffering from cardiac irregularities and other cardiac ailments.

"India is ready to fulfill the demand of hydroxychloroquine as and when its need arises. As on today, the availability of this medicine is higher than its demand. The government is also ready for future if demand rises," said Mr Aggarwal.
