A research conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in collaboration with other organizations has revealed that 28% out of the 40,184 Covid patients between January 22 and April 30, 2020, were found to be asymptomatic, indicating that numbers could be higher if more studies are conducted in the present scenario where cases and deaths due to the virus have increased in India.

If the findings of this study are believed, then it is highly possible that asymptomatic Covid carriers might be factors in contributing a large chunk of Covid cases and deaths in the country so far. This has been claimed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in his recent digital conference where he said that many Covid patients coming to hospitals are unaware that they carry the virus.

As per study findings, 25.3% out of 28.1% were direct and high-risk contacts, while 2.8% were healthcare workers in contact with confirmed cases without adequate protection

Dr Manoj Murhekar, Director, National Institute of Epidemiology and one of the authors of the study informed that the proportion of the asymptomatic infected people could be much more than the 28.1% and this is a cause of concern.

He added that the proportion of confirmed cases was highest among asymptomatic contacts, two-three-fold higher than among those with severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), those with an international travel history or healthcare workers.
