Reports of people running from pillar to post in the quest for Covid beds in government hospitals in Delhi has been in public domain.

However, the ground reality is that getting a bed in private hospitals has also become  an uphill task as almost all Covid beds in the five designated hospitals are occupied and even those who are willing to pay whatever the hospital charges are returning empty handed.

A Noida resident, who had developed Covid-like symptoms, wanted to get treatment without delay and he was ready to pay a good amount for treatment in private hospitals to avoid any complications of the dreaded disease.

Initially, it looked easy that he would get a bed in a dedicated Covid private hospital in Delhi, but he become anxious when he got to know that he would not be able to get a bed in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Sir Ganga Ram Kolmet hospital. Ganga Ram Hospital PRO informed DTMT on May 29, 2020, that not a single Covid bed was available in the hospital.

When this correspondent talked to Public Relations Officer at Apollo Hospital, she too informed DTMT that all the Covid beds were full and she would inform if any bed is vacated. It has been three days yet no Covid bed is available in Apollo hospital.

After that this correspondent talked to a doctor working in the Covid ward in Delhi’s Max Saket Hospital, to inquire about availability of a bed. The doctor informed that hospital would charge Rs 90,000 per day for a ward and for ICU and ventilator, the charges would be extra.

The patient agreed to pay this hefty amount but his hopes were dashed when he was informed that all the beds were occupied in this hospital too. When the correspondent inquired about availability of beds in Batra hospital, it was informed that first the patient will have to pay Rs two lakh in advance only after that bed will be available. But all the isolation beds were occupied there too.

If this is the situation for people who can afford treatment in private hospitals, one can imagine the situation a common man seeking Covid treatment will be facing in the national capital.
