Covid-19: NDMC starts fining in anti spitting drive

In a bid to contain the rising cases of coronavirus, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has launched an intensive ‘Anti Spitting’ drive by a special squad of 10 civil wardens, with immediate effect.


NDMC earlier issued a notification that spitting in public places shall be punished with a fine of Rs.1000 and to spread awareness among the public.

“Apart from the fine or challenging, these civic wardens will also spread awareness and educate the public about the ill effects of spitting and urinating in public places,” NDMC said in a statement.

These civic wardens will perform their duty in a unique uniform marked with NDMC Logo and carry a POS Machine for on the spot challaning. The POS Machine also has the option of e- payment, if any violators have no cash to pay the fine.

If the violator has no money to pay the fine, they will be produced before the special municipal magistrate to take action as per the provisions of laws, it said.

As per the notification, “In the first phase the anti spitting drive will cover the  Connaught Place, Khan Market, Gole Market, Sarojni Nagar Market, Bengali Market, Janpath and other prominent market areas.”

“In the second phase by mid July the drive will cover the parks, gardens and other public places to fine the violators,” it added.
