Face masks, sanitizers off essential commodities' list

The Central government has taken out face masks and hand sanitizers from the list of essential commodities. The relaxation will help free pricing, storage and marketing of the two products, which are in great demand in view of the outbreak of Coronavirus across the country.
In an official communication, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has said, “There are no adverse reports from the states/UTs with respect to price or availability to continue face masks and hand sanitizers as essential commodities.”
“Therefore, this department has decided not to continue these items as essential commodities under the Essential Commodities Act 1955,” it declared.
On March13, 2020, the government put masks and hand sanitizers under Essential Commodities Act (ECA) upto June 30, 2020, to ensure proper availability of these items in the market at the correct price in view of the outbreak of Corona Virus.
