IMA sounds red alert for medics on Covid-19 duty

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued the red warning for doctors who, it says, could have an extremely heavy toll while on Covid-19 duties.
The top doctors' body of the country has put the doctors and other health care providers on red alert during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The IMA noted that during the initial stages of the pandemic, doctors were exposed to the virus while not having access to personal protection equipment, gloves, face shields and other secondary protective gears.
Analysis of data shows that while senior doctors and young doctors are equally infected with Covid the mortality is higher among elders. While this is on expected lines there is scope for lessening deaths across ages. Meticulous adherence to norms and discipline inside hospitals will have a salutary effect, the IMA has said in a statement.
IMA national president, Dr Rajan Sharma, said, “COVID death amongst doctors is of great concern. Medical profession remains the beacon of hope for the nation to lead the exit from the pandemic.”
He said, “Doctors need to take charge of the situation and ensure the safety of themselves, their families, their colleagues and staff. Senior doctors who are decision makers for the institutions have an enhanced responsibility of taking care of their flock.”
Dr Sharma advised, “Providing for PPEs, triaging, physical distancing and sanitisers should be monitored on a daily basis. Operation theaters, labour rooms, laboratories and casualties require special care. ICUs and Critical Care units deserve close scrutiny for adherence to best practices and protocols.”
