A senior doctor was attacked and slapped multiple times by relatives of a patient who died after respiratory failure at Global Hospital in Nashik. The incident happened on the evening of August 3, 2020.

In a video that has gone viral on social media platforms, the doctor, Dr Dinesh Patil, is sitting in a chair in his room and is surrounded by four men. It appears that Dr Patil explains the cause of death to them. The doctor’s explanation does not satisfy them and one of the men slaps the doctor.

He continues to slap for a while and he also hits the doctor’s head with a plastic water bottle. The medical fraternity has expressed anger over repeated acts of violence against doctors in Maharashtra.

Informing about the assault, Dr Sameer Chandratre, President IMA Nashik, said that the patient was admitted to Global hospital a few days back with SPO2< 75. Patient was admitted in the grey zone and a swab was sent. Patient expired the day after admission. The Covid report of the patient came negative.

"On August 3, 2020, relatives came and started arguing with Dr Dinesh Patil. He tried to explain the condition to the relatives but they became violent and attacked Dr. Patil," added Dr Sameer.

An FIR has been registered against the culprits. Dr Ravi Wankhedkar, Past President, IMA, said that culprits have been arrested in spite of having political backing due to pressure from IMA. They have been booked under Amended Epidemic Act 2020 and Maharashtra Prevention of Violence Act, he added.
