A telephonic survey conducted by Young Lives India, a Delhi based research organization, in collaboration with University of Oxford, among 2750 people in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, has revealed that misconceptions about the symptoms of Covid-19 remain high with only 15 percent able to correctly identify the three most common Covid-19 symptoms.

The survey, done between June 10 and July 15, 2020 among respondents of 18 to 25 years of age, has found that only 7% of the respondents did not leave their homes during lockdown. “Covid cases were higher among poorer households. Only 32 percent of those displaying symptoms were tested. The economic impact of the pandemic and lockdown measures hit informal workers and self employed workers hardest,” revealed the survey.

As per the survey findings, young women bore the brunt of increased care responsibilities. About 90 percent of households in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana received government support but 16 percent households reported food insecurity during the lockdown.

High level of anxiety was recorded, with 89 percent of the respondent expressing nervousness about the current circumstances. Towards the end of March 2020, India went into a nationwide lockdown in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which lasted for 75 days.
