In the time of Covid-19 pandemic, government and people expect medical professionals to serve round the clock. However, at North Delhi Municipal Corporation-run Kasturba Gandhi Hospital, all employees, excepting doctors, have been on strike for two hours everyday for the last ten days due to non-payment of their salary. This two hours-strike is yet to draw the government’s attention.

Dr Maruti Singh from the Department of Gynecology, Kasturba Hospital, informed that all staff, excepting doctors, have not been paid salary for the last three to four months. Even doctors have not been paid for July and August, she added.

This is not the first time when the medical staff has struck work in the hospital. In fact, doctors and other medical staff striking work due to not getting the payment for months has become a routine affair.

Doctors have halted their work on many occasions. They have even sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in this long pending problem of not getting their due for months. They even threatened mass resignation but all in vain. Their problem continues as usual.

This time, other staffers, including nurses, have expressed their displeasure over non-payment of salary. This has forced them to strike work for two hours daily, which has affected the healthcare services at the hospital. They silently protested in vehicle parking of the hospital.

The hospital, located in congested area of Delhi’s Daryaganj, serves a number of lady patients with gynecological diseases, facilitates a number of deliveries and treats children suffering from different ailments. The two-hour delay in treatment in even routine OPD services can cause massive chaos at the hospital.
