Covid reinfection possible if antibodies fall: ICMR

Dr Balram Bhargava, Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, has said that there is need to practice all appropriate safe Covid behavior such as mask wearing, regular hand washing and physical distancing even for people who have recovered from the disease.

Addressing the media in Delhi on October 20, 2020, Dr Bhargava said, “If antibodies reduce in any person in five months, then there is possibility of reinfection. That is why it is important to wear a mask and take precautions even if one was infected earlier.”

Dr Bhargava’s comment has come after reinfection of Covid has been reported in India and other parts of the world. It has been noted that Covid antibodies do not remain for long and exposure to the corona virus can cause reinfection.
