Dr Vinod Kumar Paul, Chairperson, Covid Vaccine Task Force and Member-Health of Niti Aayog, got the first dose of Covaxin at Delhi-AIIMS on January 16, 2021.

Speaking exclusively to DTMT, Dr Paul asserted that he is fit and fine. "I have no issue, not at all. I appeal that all should get administered this vaccine. Have faith in it and this is a great vaccine. This will also save people around the globe."

Dr Paul said that both Covishield and Covaxin are good vaccines. Those marked for vaccination should get it without any doubt or hesitation, he added.

He said that as the vaccination program will continue, the pandemic will come under control and the situation will change but at the same time we will have to wear masks, keep physical distance and take other precautions. "Still, this virus is unpredictable. This comes with second and third peaks,’ he added.

Dr Paul informed that one crore and sixty five lakh doses of Covaxin and Covishield have been given to states and UTs. These doses can only fulfill demands of a few weeks.

Responding to queries over distribution of Covaxin to central government-run hospitals and Covishield to Delhi government-run hospitals, Dr Paul said it was decided that both vaccines will be distributed in a ratio or numbers. After that, which vaccine is to be administered at which site had to be decided by the state government.

“They have given Covaxin here. Hence, it is valid and it has no issue. Wherever Covaxin is available, it should be taken and adopt it,” he added.

Responding to some resident doctors preferring Covishield over Covaxin, Dr Paul said, “I appeal to them with folded hands that they should not do this. You should get administered this vaccine and become a role model. You should trust the made in India vaccine and show confidence and pride. Scientists have done their research work on this vaccine. I hope that they (doctors) will also come with us," hoped Dr Paul.

On vaccination for the common man, Dr Paul said that they will also be vaccinated "but those who may die and their families may be devastated, they should get it first. First, we vaccinate these 30 crore. After that we will vaccinate others," he added.
