China reports highest daily COVID cases in current outbreak

China has reported its highest daily count for new COVID-19 in its current outbreak, fuelled by a surge in locally transmitted infections.
According to the National Health Commission, 124 confirmed new infections were recorded in the mainland for August 5, which is higher than the day earlier which reported 85 new cases.
The health authority informed that out of the newly reported cases, 80 were transmitted locally which is again higher than a day earlier that witnessed 62 local cases.
A surge in COVID cases in eastern Jiangsu province resulted in the local cases that recorded 61 new infections on August 5—higher than a day earlier that reported 40 cases.
The new COVID cases were mainly witnessed in the city of Yangzhou.
Overall, the country recorded 58 new asymptomatic COVID cases, which it doesn’t classify as confirmed infections, compared with 54 cases reported a day earlier.
As of now, no new fatalities were reported.
As of August 5, 2021, mainland China had reported 93,498 confirmed cases. The cumulative death toll is unchanged and stands at 4,636.
