New Zealand reports first COVID-related death in 6 months

New Zealand on September 4, 2021 reported its first death related to COVID-19 in six months, but the health authorities have informed that there were signs that the outbreak of the highly infectious Delta strain was coming under control.
On the night of September 3, 2021, a woman in her 90s, who had underlying health problems and could not receive a ventilator or intensive care support, died in an Auckland hospital.
She is the 27th person in New Zealand to die with the coronavirus and the first witnessed since February 16 this year.
Authorities informed that the woman came in contact with a person who had already been tested positive for the virus in Auckland—New Zealand’s largest city with around 1.7 million population.
New Zealand has been combating the outbreak of COVID-19 since the first locally transmitted infection in six months was found in mid-August, pushing the nation of five million into lockdown.
Since then, 782 cases have been reported, primarily in Auckland, which persists at its highest level of restrictions while the rest of the nation has eased back curbs.
The fatality was “a deeply sad reminder of why the measures we are undertaking right now are so important,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.
“Our older New Zealanders and those with underlying health issues are by far the most at risk from the virus, and one of the reasons lockdowns are such an important tool to stop its spread,” she added.
Only 20 new positive cases were recorded on September 4, 2021, down from a peak in the latest outbreak of 84 last weekend.
Caroline McEnlay, the director of public health, has described the decreasing infections over the past week as “encouraging” and said, “we are being successful in breaking the chain of transmission.”
