Bacteria capable of wiping out disease-carrying mosquitoes: Australian study

A multi-institutional study including a team of researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), in Australia, has found that specific bacteria can be used to wipe out dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Researchers released 3 million male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, sterilised with the Wolbachia bacteria – (a natural bacteria present in up to 60 per cent of insect species, but not in Aedes aegypti), into three North Queensland trial sites over 20 weeks in 2018.
While initial results in the trial sites showed an average drop in mosquito population by 80 per cent, as eggs laid by female mosquitoes after mating with sterilised males, failed to hatch, almost complete eradication of mosquito population after a year was reported.
“Over 40 per cent of humans suffer from mosquito-spread diseases, so it's an opportunity for Australia to develop environmentally-friendly mosquito control tools to tackle current and future mosquito incursions,” the Chief Executive of the CSIRO, Larry Marshall said.
The trial was an international collaboration between the CSIRO, the University of Queensland, Verily Life Sciences, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, and James Cook University.
