Amid record-breaking heat, Centre directs states to review healthcare preparedness

Amid the record-breaking spell of heatwave engulfing the country, the Union Health Ministry has directed the states to take a stock of the healthcare facilities and continue the effort to sensitise healthcare workers on heat illness, its early recognition and management.
In the letter to the Chief Secretaries of the States and Union Territories, the Union Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan said that the states must ensure adequate drinking water facilities and functioning of cooling appliances in critical areas of health facilities in their respective states.
“Health facility preparedness must be reviewed for the availability of adequate quantities of essential medicines, IV fluids, ice packs ORS and all necessary equipment,” the Union Health secretary wrote in his letter.
Noting that the healthcare facilities need to increase resilience to extreme heat by arranging uninterrupted power supply, the letter asked the states to take appropriate steps to reduce the indoor temperatures.
The Union Health Secretary also directed the states to spread awareness in the communities regarding the dos and don’ts to encounter the current heatwave which recorded maximum average temperatures during April across Northwest and Central India in 122 years.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has predicted some relief in the coming days, with expected thunderstorms over Northwest and East India till May 4, 2022.
