Meerut residents with hearing problems will get better diagnostic facilities in their city as the PL Sharma district hospital will be equipped with an acoustic room for audiometry in order to test the level of hearing impairment in patients

The move is expected to benefit not only patients in Meerut but also from nearby districts. An acoustic room is a novelty in this region and is likely to give a reprieve to patients who go to Delhi and other major cities for getting treatment of hearing problems.

The initiative comes under central government’s National Program for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD).

Dr PK Bansal, Medical Superintendent of the district hospital, said that NPPCD project is a central government project which aims to prevent and control major causes of hearing impairment, to reduce the total burden by 25 per cent.

Dr Bansal added that the room construction will begin soon that will be used for audiometry to check the level of deafness in patients and pursue the treatment accordingly.

Problem of deafness is highly prevalent in India. According to a WHO report, around 63 million people are suffering from significant auditory impairment in India which places the estimated prevalence at 6.3 per cent in the Indian population.
