Protect yourself from skin and hair allergies this Holi

BS RAWAT
NEW DELHI:
Ahead of Holi, doctors have urged people to use protection for their skin and hair and avoid synthetic colours during the festival to prevent allergies.

Subsequent to Holi festival, there is normally a spurt in cases of patients complaining about skin allergy, which can be avoided with basic precautions, doctors say.

Dr Naresh Arora of Chase Aromatherapy Cosmetics and Skin Care Institute, New Delhi, told DTMT, “A day before Holi, apply mustard oil all over the body, especially the face, hands and legs, as these are exposed areas where colour will be thrown. This will keep your skin protected and also allow you to remove the colours with ease.

Dr Arora conducted a Skin Care Camp at its clinic in New Delhi on March 20, 2019, for spreading awareness about the harmful effects of different chemical colours.

He stated, “The hair should be well oiled so that it is protected from the harmful chemicals and prevents colours from penetrating deep into the roots.”

You can also use a lotion. This is also very effective in keeping clear of colours later, and will clean even the strongest of colours, Dr Arora added.

Dr. Manoj Sharma, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla, said, “One should wear loose cotton clothes. Long sleeved tops and full length pants. Nail paint should be applied on the nails (toes and fingers) to prevent staining.”

He warned, “Even if colours to do not come off easily one should avoid using face scrubs. They tend to cause irritation to the skin. Mild cleansers and a generous dose of body lotion can be used while bathing.”

“Do not use harsh soap and shampoo for cleaning. Use a mild shampoo to remove oil, dirt and colour,” Dr Sharma added.

Ms Seema Singh, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Fortis Vasant Kunj, Delhi, said, “Stay hydrated by drinking enough water before, after and on Holi. Instead of tea and coffee, fill your stomach with coconut water, lemon water, soup and fruits.”

Dr Archana Dhawan Bajaj, Gynaecologist, Nurture IVF Centre, said, “Be watchful on Holi if you are pregnant.”

Dr Bajaj emphasized playing Holi with natural colors, which will protect you against any mishap during pregnancy. Cover your mouth and nose with mask to avoid any direct intake of colors, she suggested.
