UNICEF: More kids die of unsafe water than by bullets

DTMT Network
NEW YORK:
The latest report by the UNICEF has revealed that children under the age of 15 in conflict zones, such as North East Nigeria, are three times more likely to die from water-related diseases than from bullets.

A report says that children living in countries affected by protracted conflict are, on average, almost three times more likely to die from diarrheal diseases caused by a lack of safe water, sanitation and hygiene than by direct violence.

The report said, "Water Under Fire" looks at mortality rates in 16 countries going through prolonged conflicts and finds that in most of them children under the age of five are more than 20 times more likely to die from diarrhea-related causes linked to lack of access to safe water and sanitation than direct violence.”

UNICEF's Executive Director Henrietta Fore said, “The odds are already stacked against kids living through prolonged conflicts - with many children unable to reach a safe water source.’

She added, “The reality is that there are more kids who die from lack of access to safe water than by bullets.”

Without safe and effective water, hygiene and sanitation services, children are at risk of malnutrition and preventable diseases including diarrhea, typhoid, cholera and polio, the report informed.
