There is good news for PG medical seat aspirants from Telangana state. The regulator of medical education in the country- Medical Council Of India ( MCI) - has decided to enhance the existing PG medical seats in the state and the country.

MCI has relaxed its existing rules which has put a cap on the total number of PG medical seats in the state and the country.  According to the sources in the state government, the MCI has asked all the managements of government and private medical colleges to submit their applications for enhancement of the PG seats in the respective colleges.  

The MCI has written a formal letter urging the chief secretaries of all the states of the country to take steps for the enhancement of the seats. In the letter, the medical education regulator, has stated that it would sanction three PG seats for every unit consisting of 30 beds and 5 PG seats for a unit consisting of 40 beds. The MCI has also  reduced the bed requirement for the sanction of super specialty seats in the medical colleges of the country. The MCI will now sanction 4 super specialty medical seats for unit consisting of 20 beds and 5 seats for unit consisting of 30 beds.

The authorities of the medical education department of the state are of the view that the medical colleges will now get more number of PG and super specialty medical seats if they increase their units by reducing the number of beds. “Such a possibility was not there earlier. However, the relaxation of the rules by the MCI by reducing the number of beds has made it possible. The management of any medical college can simply reduce their bed strength by dividing them into more units and get more PG seats,” an official of the department told DTMT. The state currently has 1623 PG medical seats. Of this, 706 PG seats are available in government medical colleges and the remaining 917 PG seats are available in private medical colleges.
